This week's return to school was centred around sharing culture through community, as we celebrated NAIDOC Week with our Corinda family.

Today, students were invited to join Indigenous mixed media artist and Corinda alumni Chantel Bates to create a special mural to commemorate our Elders. While the students painted mountains, waterways and meeting places, they enjoyed conversations and shared stories about what their Elders mean to them. Each student was also encouraged to leave their fingerprint on the artwork to represent their coming together as a community. On completion, the mural will feature in the Research & Innovation Centre, which is a buzzing hub for students.

Australian actress and fellow Corinda alumni Talijah Blackman-Corowa was invited join our First Nations students on Wednesday to take part in a tree planting ceremony marking the first step in Corinda State High School's bush tucker trail. The trail, which will wind throughout the creek-side of the campus, is shaded by large eucalyptus trees, and thanks to the work of the students, is now home to dozens of native hibiscus, soap trees, finger limes, dwarf plum pines, and black beans.

On Monday, we welcomed Brendon Cook from Deadly Choices, who met with students and led a meaningful discussion about the Stolen Generation and healthy choices. Year 10 student Rakita had the opportunity to connect with Brendon, and shared some thoughts about the profound significance NAIDOC Week holds for her.

“It is a time to embrace and celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, histories, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples," she said.

“It allows me to connect with my heritage, honour the resilience of my ancestors, and share my pride in being a part of a vibrant and ancient culture. NAIDOC Week reminds me of the importance of cultural preservation, education, and reconciliation, not only within my school but also within the broader community.

“It is a powerful opportunity to promote understanding, respect, and harmony between all Australians, fostering a future where our voices, stories, and contributions are not only acknowledged but also celebrated."
