Our Year 10 Science and Year 11 Biology students recently returned from Heron Island, where they engaged in unforgettable experiences combining conservation, adventure, and education.
Over six days, they explored vibrant reefs through boat snorkels, supported turtle conservation by clearing a loggerhead enclosure, and collected biodiversity data. Immersed in the island’s beauty, they enjoyed reef walks, sunrise chases, and stargazing.
Student Genevieve M shared her thoughts: "The Heron Island excursion has been the highlight of my year. Snorkelling through crystal-clear waters and observing marine life, including nesting turtles, was unforgettable. Sharing sunrises and sunsets with friends and teachers made it even more special. Meeting researchers at the UQ Research Station was a privilege and inspired potential careers in marine biology. Hands-on activities like transects and projects allowed us to truly engage with the reef ecosystem. This trip, made even better by the students and teachers, has been an incredible and unforgettable experience."
This hands-on journey left lasting memories and deepened connections to the marine environment. A heartfelt thank you to our Heron Island sponsor, Shelly's Swim School, for supporting this incredible opportunity! We are looking forward to returning next year in what will be our 59th Heron Island excursion.
