Literacy
Literacy encompasses the knowledge, skills and dispositions that students need to use language for different purposes in a range of contexts. The General Capability of Literacy is organised into three elements and sets of sub-elements:
- Speaking and listening
- Reading and viewing
- Phonological awareness
- Phonic knowledge and word recognition
- Fluency
- Understanding texts.
- Writing
- Creating texts
- Grammar
- Punctuation
- Spelling
- Handwriting and keyboarding.
At Corinda SHS, all staff are coached by expert teachers and the Literacy Coordinator to embed a suite of Signature Literacy Practices. These reading and writing strategies and routines support students in the junior and senior years of learning.
Students are onboarded, at the start of each academic year, onto Writer's Toolbox Online. A colourful and engaging teaching and learning program, Writer's Toolbox reinforces student understanding and application of clear, meaningful written communication in all subject areas. A key feature of Writer's Toolbox is its targeted, instant feedback on spelling, grammar and punctuation – using AI – that teaches students how to improve their own work.
Numeracy
Numeracy, the ability to understand and work with numbers is a foundational skill critical in a high school setting.
At Corinda numeracy is embedded into all curriculum areas by incorporating mathematical concepts and skills into subject-specific contexts, allowing students to apply numerical understanding in diverse ways. By embedding numeracy into these areas, students see its relevance to real-world situations and develop a holistic understanding of its importance.
Additionally, our Year 7 Wrap classes are dedicated to numeracy skills such as Problem-solving, mental maths and logical reasoning.
Fostering strong numeracy skills equips students with the confidence to navigate both academic challenges and real-world scenarios, laying the groundwork for future success in higher education, careers, and personal endeavours.
