Golden Opportunity Days

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Golden Opportunity Days are a chance for primary school students in the Corinda SHS catchment area to explore the range of Excellence and other enrichment programs our school has to offer. These days focus on higher order thinking, critical thinking and collaboration.

These days are an experience for primary school students to feel more comfortable in a high school environment and gain practice in a number of unique subject areas. 

Please register your interest to attend one of our highly regarded Golden Opportunity Days using the registration forms below. Please note, only the first 25 students will be accepted into each program.


Frequently asked Questions

Q. Can I pay over the phone?

A. Unfortunately, no. Payments are required to be made in person at our payments window. Payments can be made to the payments office either on the morning of the activity or in advance. The payments office is located up the stairs off Pratten Street and is open from 7:30am – 1:30pm on school days.

Q. What time do we come to the school?

A. Registration is from 8:30am – 8:45am. Please note there will be no supervision provided until 8:30am. The day will commence at 8:45am. You are welcome to wait with your child until 8:45 if you wish and ask any questions to the Deputy in charge at this time.

Q. What do they wear?

A. Students are required to wear full school uniform unless otherwise specified by the program.

Q. Can they go home with an older sibling?

A. Students are able to be collected from the pickup area by an older sibling if we are informed prior to the day commencing. We will require the older sibling name and home group.

Q. Can they participate more than once?

A. Students can participate in multiple Golden Opportunity Days. We do not recommend repeating the same subject twice as often the materials may be similar.

Q. Will I receive a confirmation email?

A. No. When you complete the registration form, a message will appear telling you the registration was successful. You will not receive any further information until one week out from the event. Please ensure you make note of the date of the event and what the event was called in case you have any enquiries.

Q. I am unsure if my registration worked?

A. Please email excellence@corindashs.eq.edu.au with your child's name and the name of the Golden Opportunity Day and date you believe you enrolled in. We will be in contact within 2 working days

Q. I cannot register / the link is not working?

A. We close the links once it is a few days out from the event or when the event is full. We aim to list "sold out" on the website if it is sold out. Registrations for all events close the Friday prior to the Golden Opportunity day.

Q. Does my primary school know I am attending?

A. We provide students with a certificate of completion, which you can show your school as proof of attendance. We do not inform the school that your child is attending the​ high school for the day.

Week 3
4 May 

Dance Workshop

This session is a workshop for students interested in trialling for the Dance Program of Excellence in 2023 or 2024.

Students will participate in a range of workshops targeted at developing an appreciation of the body's ability to move in different ways. These workshops will allow students to engage with a variety of dance genres such as Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical and Musical theatre. They will explore new approaches to choreographing movement via innovative creative problem solving methods, whilst also developing technical skills by learning teacher devised routines. Students will also develop a greater understanding of safe dance practice through warm ups that aim to increase strength, refine body alignment and enhance flexibility and total fitness.

​Tennis Excellence  

This session is a trial for students interested in the Tennis Program of Excellence in 2023 and 2024. 

The day will focus on teamwork and principles of our Tennis Excellence Program. In our first session, players will participate in fast-paced team drills to develop their ability to train under pressure but still work as a group. Our Second Session will see our players teach basic biomechanical principles that we will use in our training sessions during the year. In our final session, we’ll implement match play and fun group games to finish. Students with a passion and experience in Tennis should register their interest.

​Football Excellence 

This session is a trial for students interested in the Football Program of Excellence in 2023 and 2024. 

Students will participate in a variety of skill acquisition drills focusing on the core elements of the game as well as experience a strength and conditioning session. The sessions focus on the main attributes that aim to improve strength, mobility, and flexibility that are specific to Football related fitness.

Showcasing Design and Engineering using solutions from Nature 

Biomimicry, as it’s called, is a method for creating solutions to human challenges by emulating designs and ideas found in nature. It’s used everywhere: buildings, vehicles, and even materials. Teams will compete against each other by searching for ideas and resources at the School’s Agricultural Section to solve an engineering challenge. You will also learn about the skills of Emotional Intelligence to better understand yourself and others. The session will be led by experts from University of QLD and Griffith University.

​​​​Music - Creative Collaborations

This session is a workshop for students interested in trialling for the Music Program of Excellence in 2023 or 2024. 

‘Creative Collaborations’ begins with students learning a contemporary piece to warm up the group and develop teamwork and encourage collaboration. Students will refine ensemble skills in new small ensemble contexts in a fun workshop tailored to assess students' musicianship and sight-reading skills. After Morning Tea, visiting students will participate in 'Peer Projects' where specialised CSHS Music Excellence students will mentor visitors as they address technique, expression and best practice around repertoire selection when playing an instrument for leisure. Students will rehearse and develop music alongside an expert musician. This session will include a Q and A with current students around what it is like participating in Music Excellence and Corinda’s band program. Finally, after Lunch, students will be treated to a composition and recording workshop where they will experiment with the Music department’s suite of MacBook Pros.

​Engineering the Centre of Gravity         

Ever wonder what keeps our feet on the ground and why? Gravity is the force that attracts two bodies toward each other, the force that causes apples to fall toward the ground and the planets to orbit the sun. The more massive an object is, the stronger it’s gravitational pull. Students will conduct several practical activities and participate in demonstrations of a range of gravitational examples and explore how the centre of gravity impacts moving objects. Students will spend the day delving into engineering principals before being challenged to design, create, test and manipulate their own moving object.

​​Visual Art - Visual Art Workshops

This session is a workshop for students interested in trialling for the Visual Art Program of Excellence in 2023 or 2024. 

Students will experiment with contemporary art techniques and processes to manipulate a range of materials in a high school art classroom setting. They will solve innovative creative problems to produce an abstract artwork by the end of the day.

Culinary Masterclass 

This session is a workshop for students interested in trialling for the Culinary Program of Excellence in 2023 or 2024. 

Students will participate in a day in the kitchen. The day will involve hands-on activities, teamwork and of course delicious food. If you have a passion for working in a kitchen and designing food products this day is for you.

​Rainbow Chemistry 

Colourful Chemistry provides students with the opportunity to complete a range of practical activities, with a focus on explaining observations made. There will be flames, amazing colour changes and even some explosions! Students will complete safety inductions, work in a scientific laboratory and take part in some amazing chemical reactions.

​Tech Pioneers  

Students will become tech pioneers when they learn how to code their very own micro:bit!  Students will discover how these ingenious devices can inspire creativity and refine the computational thinking skills needed in a tech world. They will engage in three projects on the day that will challenge their problem-solving skills and flame their love of coding. Students will take home their own micro:bit kit so that the learning can continue!
