Junior secondary

Our Junior Secondary program provides education that is responsive to the development needs of students in the early years of adolescence.
 

Children in this age range are experiencing an unmatched period of cognitive, physical, social and emotional change and growth. Students are beginning to think more broadly about issues beyond home and family and want to engage in authentic, meaningful learning in a modern global context. 
Our Junior Secondary curriculum is aligned with the Australian Curriculum (ACARA) in Maths, Science, English and History. Each subject area includes the content descriptors to be taught, the general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities.  All other Key Learning Areas (KLAs) are aligned to Education Queensland’s Curriculum and Assessment and Reporting Framework (QCARF).  

Excellence programs   

We are committed to supporting our advanced (beyond year level) and gifted (identified) students by providing differentiated learning opportunities through our excellence programs.

Literacy and numeracy  

Research has shown that by improving literacy and numeracy skills in the middle years can decrease the risk of students performing poorly in their senior years of study. Here at Corinda, we are committed to providing students with explicit teaching of literacy and numeracy across all subject areas. This includes targeted literacy and numeracy student workbooks, specialised reading program (RAR) and intensive literacy and numeracy programs. Students will also participate in practice NAPLAN testing to help direct curriculum planning and delivery.  When further information is required, students will participate in diagnostic testing to inform intensive intervention.

Student Leadership Program

Student Leadership Program (SLP) is an award winning program that culminates in students obtaining their Certificate II in Active Volunteering. It begins in Year 8 with students volunteering around the school. This is followed up in Year 9 when students complete volunteering projects which are developed within their SLP class groups. These activities prepare students for 30 hours volunteering in the community in order to meet the requirements of the vocational qualification Certificate II in Active Volunteering which they work towards in their senior years. 

Learning support  

Students identified with learning difficulties are supported within our Foundation Literacy and Numeracy Classes. Students are recommended for this program after analysing their academic progress and in consultation with our learning support teachers, primary schools and parents.
